Some Fact and Figures about Root Ball Size
Every one of our grafted conifers is treated this way:
Step 1: Our bare root seedlings arrive at the nursery. They are sorted and all are root pruned.
Step 2: Seedlings are healed in bed of fir/hemlock sawdust. After a couple of weeks –
Step 3: All understocks are pulled and dipped in a root fungicide.
Step 4: They are then muddled (roots are dipped in a soil-mud solution) before potting into a 4 inch band pot.
Step 5: Some 7 months later, they are removed from our seedling beds and made ready for grafting by root pruning.
Step 6: The grafts are placed in heated benches for the winter months.
Step 7: Our cultivated conifers are moved once again (in the spring) to be replanted into 1 gallon containers, being root pruned.
Step 8: They are now on their way for the new growth.
Step 9: Plants remain in gallons and are watered and fertilized for the next year.
Step 10: The grafts are now 2 years old, ready to be moved to our holding site for fall planting (again root pruned).
Step 11: Once again, they are relocated, this time into our growing fields.
Step 12: Field root pruning occurs during the 4th year.
So with these 12 steps behind and another 2 years of growth, we are ready to start digging our Wells conifers and shipping them to you.
What we have created:
A very dense, smaller sized root ball, which with proper care and maintenance, zero mortality
Instead of having 20% roots, you probably have 80% roots
Because of all the steps we’ve taken, we ask you to take one step for the benefit of these exceptional conifers: Take care of them. Water and fertilize them. Their root system deserves it!
